Storylines
- The 18th-ranked UNCG's women's soccer team will try to remain undefeated and extend the best start in school history Sunday when it faces Cal State Fullerton in the final game of the Under Armour Invitational.
- The Spartans played to a scoreless draw with 2007 national champion Southern Cal on Friday in the first game of the tournament. Keeper Kelsey Kearney made three saves for her third shutout of the season.
- UNCG is undefeated through four games for the first time in school history after opening the season with wins over East Carolina, No. 10 Wake Forest and Utah and the tie against USC. The Spartans jumped into the Soccer America Top 25 this week at No. 18, good for their first national ranking since being No. 13 in the Soccer Buzz preseason poll in 1998.
- The hot start has earned a pair of UNCG student-athletes some weekly accolades. Forward Lauren Hein was named one of CollegeSoccer360.com's Primetime Performers of the Week, while Kearney took the first Southern Conference Player of the Week award of the 2010 campaign on Tuesday.
- The Spartans will be meeting Cal State Fullerton for the first time in school history.
- The trip out to California is just the second taken by the UNCG women's soccer team in its history. The first came in 2008, when it was in the Stanford/Nike Invitational in Pala Alto, Calif. There, the Spartans knocked off then-No. 15 Santa Clara 1-0 and fell to the host Cardinal 2-0. This season's trip is just the third to the West Coast in UNCG's history – the Spartans also played in Oregon State's OSU Nike Classic in Corvallis, Ore., in 2004.
- In their history, the Spartans have played just six games against California teams, posting a 2-3-1 record against California (lost 4-0 in 1999), Fresno State (won 2-1 in 2004), Santa Clara (won 1-0 in 2008), Stanford (lost 2-0 in 2008 and 1-0 in 2009) and USC (tied 0-0 Friday).
- Sophomore Tabitha Padgett leads UNCG with four points on the season, while Hein and freshman Kory Spotts are tied for second with three points each (one goal, one assist each). Kearney has played all 380 minutes in goal, posting a goals against average of 0.24.
- Kearney's shutout against USC was the 22nd of her career, moving her into sole possession of second on UNCG's career list. Kearney, a junior, now trails school-record holder Jennifer Stillman by three. Kearney is also UNCG's career leader in GAA, as she holds a mark of 0.60 in 42 matches played.
- The Titans dropped to 1-2-0 on the season with a 2-1 loss to Purdue in the second game of the Under Armour Invitational on Friday night. The Boilermakers converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute for the game-winning goal. Purdue had jumped on top early, scoring in the eighth minute, but Cal State Fullerton pulled level in the 21st minute on Brisa Gonzalez's goal, as she converted Jennifer Smith's pass for her first goal of the season. Jordan-Michelle Santos made four stops in the net but allowed two goals to take the loss.
- Christina Murillo leads the Titans with three points on a goal and an assist this season, all of which came in a 4-0 win over Eastern Washington Aug. 29. Four other players are tied with two points on a goal each. Santos has seen the majority of action in goal this season, playing all but nine minutes so far. Santos has allowed five goals in three contests, good for a 1.72 GAA, and has made five saves. She and Jessica Change combined for the shutout of Eastern Washington.
- In addition to being the Spartans' first meeting with Cal State Fullerton, Sunday's contest will mark UNCG's first-ever game against a Big West Conference opponent.
