Spartans return to Soccer America Top 25

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a three-week absence, UNCG's women's soccer team returned to the national rankings this week, entering the Soccer America Top 25 for the second time this season.

The Spartans are tied for No. 25 with Wake Forest and Denver.

At 7-1-1, UNCG is off to one of the best starts in school history, second only to the 9-1-0 record the 1991 squad posted to open the season.

This year, the Spartans knocked off then-No. 10 Wake Forest on Aug. 23 before playing to a scoreless draw on Sept. 3 with Southern Cal, which was unranked at the time but is No. 17 in this week's poll.

The winner of four straight, UNCG opened Southern Conference play with wins over Chattanooga and Samford this weekend.

Following the Spartans' 3-0 start to the season, including the win over Wake Forest, UNCG jumped into the Soccer America Top 25 at No. 18 on Aug. 30. The ranking was UNCG's first since being ranked No. 13 by Soccer Buzz in the 1998 preseason.

UNCG also boasts wins over East Carolina, Utah, Charlotte and Old Dominion. The Spartans' lone loss came at the hands of Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 5.

UNCG returns to action Friday when it hosts Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
