GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Stokes scored the lone goal in the 23rd minute as UNCG's women's soccer team was leading 1-0 against No. 8 UNC after play was suspended due to lightning and rain in the area. The Spartans only exhibition lasted 28 minutes.
"We had a plan tonight and I felt like our team came out and executed it perfectly," said head coach Steve Nugent. "I want to thank UNC for giving us the opportunity to play them as it was unfortunate we didn't get to finish the game. Karin made a great turn and put a perfect pass to Stokes who put a low ball to the corner that no keeper in the country would have stopped. Jamie made some terrific saves and I am proud of her effort tonight."
UNCG withstood the early pressure from the Tar Heels as freshman goalkeeper Jamie Simmons was able to make a couple of early saves to keep the game tied.
Simmons ended the exhibition with four saves in her collegiate debut, including two from point blank range.
In the 23rd minute, senior Karin Sendel was able to gain possession and quickly turn up field finding her teammate Stokes streaking down the left side. Stokes fought off a defender and blasted the ball to the lower right corner into the net.
"I saw Karin get the ball and I immediately turned up field when she made a great pass that I felt the UNC defender on me quickly so I fired a shot and it went in," said Stokes.
The contest was UNCG's final warm-up of the preseason. The 2012 season will officially kick off on Friday, Aug. 17 against SEC foe Georgia at 7 p.m. at UGA Soccer Stadium.
