UNCG drops 5-2 decision to East Carolina
GREENSBORO, NC – Alejandra Guerra and Erica Zabkar won singles matches in straight sets, but a shorthanded UNC Greensboro squad dropped a 5-2 decision to East Carolina in women’s tennis action on a cold and blustery Friday afternoon.
The Spartans played without No. 2 player Arielle VonStrolley, who was sidelined with the flu, causing UNCG to shuffle its line-up.
Guerra topped Jessica Cook, 6-1 and 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Zabkar handled Brooke Walter at No. 4 singles – one slot up from her normal position – by identical 6-2 scores.
But the Pirates won two of three doubles pro-sets and four singles matches to earn the victory. UNCG’s lone doubles win came at No. 2 when Britney Cloer and Erica Zabkar teamed up for a 9-8 win over Varinia Soler and Hannah Priest.
UNCG (1-5) returns to action next Friday with a doubleheader, hosting UNC Asheville and Winston-Salem State. Action gets underway against UNCA at 10:30 am.
