UNCG advances in opening day at UNCW Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Valerie Behr and Lucy Dougherty advanced to the doubles Flight A semifinals with a pair of wins and Dougherty, Sarah Templeton and Valerie Akel all advanced in singles action to highlight the first day for UNC Greensboro at the UNC Wilmington Invitational Tennis Tournament on Friday.

Behr and Dougherty won twice Friday to set up a Saturday morning semifinal round match up with Kayla Schwenk and Christina Lee of UNC Wilmington. They beat UNCG's Britney Cloer and Jess Eblen in the quarterfinal round on Friday.

Templeton, who won a flight singles title at this tournament a year ago, beat Leonie Mandelkow of Charleston Southern in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2, winning the tie-breaker 7-4, in Flight C action. Akel also advanced in Flight C with a straight-set win over Radford's Emerald Lauzon. Lucy Dougherty also won in Flight B, making quick work of Ashley Rogers from North Carolina Central, 6-0 and 6-4.

Play resumes on Saturday morning at 8:30 am.

Doubles Flight A: Cloer/Eblen def. Leslie Smith/Nicole Schon (UNC Asheville) 9-7; Kayla Schwenk/Christina Lee (UNCW) def. Cloer/Eblen 8-2; Behr/Dougherty (UNCG) def. Lexi Bolesky/Kim Webb (Coastal Carolina) 9-8 (7-5).

Doubles Flight B: VonStrolley/Akel def. Tess Darling/Louise Bottomley (UNC Asheville) 8-6; Brooke Pletcher/Leonie Mandelkow (Charleston Southern) def.
