Guerra streak hits nine as UNCG rolls past Western Carolina, 7-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro's Alejandra Guerra won her ninth straight singles match and ran her career mark to 14-0 against Southern Conference foes as the Spartans shut out Western Carolina, 7-0, in women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Alejandra Guerra is now 21-7 on the year and has won nine
straight after Saturday's easy win over Izabella Glinska.
The Spartans swept all six singles matches with relative ease. UNCG
(8-4, 3-1) only lost 13 total games in singles play, seven of them
coming at No. 2 singles where Arielle VonStrolley was challenged by
Amanda Massey, but disposed of her 6-3 and 6-4.
Guerra, a senior from Tampico, Mexico who is ranked No. 72 in the nation heading into this week's new rankings, blew away Izabella Glinska, 6-1 and 6-0, at No. 1 singles to raise her mark to 21-7 this season. Guerra and VonStrolley also teamed up for a doubles win to move to 15-8 on the year.
No. 5 singles player Lucy Dougherty continued her case for SoCon Freshman of the Year, shutting out Layne Arnold, 6-0 and 6-0, for her ninth win in the last 10 outings and has won 24 straight games after having won by a pair of 6-0 scores in a match against Cal State Bakersfield earlier this week. Dougerty, a native of Melbourne, Australia, is now 4-0 in league play this season.
UNCG returns to action next Wednesday when it visits Davidson for a 3 pm match.
