UNCG falls to Furman, 5-2, in SoCon women's tennis action

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lucy Dougherty remained perfect in league play and won for the 12th time in her last 13 matches, but Southern Conference stalwart Furman defeated UNCG, 5-2, in women's tennis action Sunday afternoon.

Lucy Dougherty won her 17th match of the season, including 7-0 in league play, but UNCG lost to Furman, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Dougherty topped Lauren Tomory in a three-setter to run her mark to 17-8 overall and 7-0 in league play to further her case for Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. The freshman from Melbourne, Australia topped Lauren Tomory 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8).

However, it was the Spartans only singles win of the day. UNCG picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to earn an early 1-0 lead before Furman took control for its 95th consecutive win in SoCon regular season play.

UNCG's Alejandra Guerra saw her streaks snapped. Guerra had won 11 straight matches and was a perfect 16-0 against SoCon foes entering Sunday. However, Laura Gioia, ranked No. 15 in the nation, topped Guerra, ranked No. 82, 6-1 and 6-2, to snap both of those streaks.

Prior to Sunday, the Paladins had lost just one point in SoCon play this season.

UNCG returns to the courts on Tuesday when it visits East Carolina.
