UNCG's Guerra named SoCon Women's Tennis Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro senior
Alejandra Guerra was named the Southern Conference's
Women's Tennis Player of the Week in vote of the
league's Sports Information Directors on Tuesday.
Guerra, a senior from Tampico, Mexico, ran her singles winning
streak to nine-straight matches last week with a pair of victories
as UNCG downed Cal State Bakersfield and Western Carolina.
Guerra, competing at No. 1 singles for UNCG, downed CSU
Bakersfield's Nefeli Daimanti, 6-0, 6-1 in her first match of
the week before topping WCU's Isabella Glinska, 6-1,
6-0. Guerra teamed with Arielle VonStrolley at No. 1 doubles
for the Spartans and posted wins over CSUB's Diamanti and
Kaydee Graham (8-4) as well as Western Carolina's Ainhoa
Iglesias and Amanda Massey (8-1).
Guerra, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, was
ranked No. 72 in the ITA rankings. New rankings are due out from
the ITA sometime Tuesday.
Guerra is 21-7 overall, including a 9-2 mark this spring –
second-best in the league this season behind Georgia
Southern's Melanie Rolle (13-2) and the tops at No. 1
singles. Guerra's two losses this spring have both come out
of conference to Top 50-ranked players. She owns a 4-0 mark against
conference opponents this season and is 14-0 against SoCon foes in
her two seasons with the Spartans. She is also 15-8 in doubles play
this season, teaming up with Arielle VonStrolley, including 8-4
this spring – the best No. 1 doubles mark in the league.
UNCG returns to action Wednesday when it visits conference foe
Davidson for a 3 pm match.
