Spartans go 7-3 on first day of UVA Women's Tennis Fall Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's Niltooli Wilkins won twice in the Flight B singles bracket to lead a 7-3 day for the Spartans in first day action at the UVA Women's Tennis Fall Invitational.
The Spartans got a pair of wins by Wilkins and also saw Annette Rios advance in the Flight D singles bracket with a pair of wins, as well. Wilkins, who won the Davidson Invitational two weeks ago, knocked off the top seed of the Flight B bracket, NC State's Lenka Hojckova, in her first match, 6-4 and 6-4. She followed that up with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema.
Rios defeated Ashley Miller of NC State in the first round, 6-4 and 6-1, then handled Ryan Reichel from Dartmouth, 6-4 and 6-3.
Alex Whitehead and Stephanie Macfarlane won a first round doubles match, as well, defeating Reichel and her Dartmouth teammate Christina Dinosi, 8-3.
Tournament action resumes at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles, followed by a round of singles play.
