UNCG sweeps Chattanooga to open SoCon play
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After winning two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, UNCG swept all six singles matches as the Spartans defeated Chattanooga, 7-0, in the SoCon opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans started the match with Devon Sutherland and Mikayla Rogers taking an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles before Chattanooga bounced back to narrowly win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. It all came down to No. 2 doubles where Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty grinded out an 8-6 win to clinch the doubles point for UNCG.
Alex Whitehead got things rolling for the Spartans at No. 2 doubles as she made quick work of Alexa Flynn, 6-2, 6-0. Annette Rios followed suit with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Annie Green at No. 6 doubles.
With UNCG leading 3-0, Lucy Dougherty clinched the win for the team with her 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Stephanie Macfarlane made it 5-0 in favor of the home team as she defeated Emily Hangstefer 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Dilara Yurtkuran dropped her first set 6-0 at No. 4 singles, but battled back to win the second set 6-3 before claiming the third set 1-0 (10-5).
In the final match of the afternoon, Niltooli Wilkins and Jenna Nurik were locked in a tight battle at No. 1 singles. Wilkins took the first set, 7-5, but dropped the second set to Nurik, 6-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker for the third set, the two players went back-and-forth before Wilkins pulled out the set, 14-12. Wilkins is now 4-0 on the season at No. 1 singles.
The Spartans will take on undefeated Samford on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
