UNCG cruises past Charleston Southern, 5-1
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG opened by sweeping all three doubles match and carried that over into singles competition as the Spartans cruised past Charleston Southern, 5-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans (9-4) jumped out to the early 1-0 lead as they won the doubles point for the 10th time in 13 matches. The duo of Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, to get things started and moved their overall record in doubles to 11-2.
Alex Whitehead and Stephanie Macfarlane clinched the doubles point for UNCG as they won 8-1 for their seventh straight win in doubles and now have a 10-2 record this season. Annette Rios and Mikayla Rogers made it a clean sweep with their 8-4 win at No. 3.
Dougherty quickly pushed UNCG's lead to 2-0 as she scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles before Macfarlane scored a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Charleston Southern (6-7) scored its lone team point of the day as Marija Dzakovic won a hard-fought match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4. UNCG came right back as Dilara Yurtkuran scored a tough 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to clinch the victory for the Spartans.
Wilkins pushed her record to 12-1 at No. 1 singles with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to make the score 5-1. Rogers was in the third set of her match at No. 6 singles before the team's ran out of time at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, which forced an end to the match.
The Spartans will kick off a stretch of six straight Southern Conference matches on Saturday as they travel to Furman for a 12 p.m. match.
