SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG's women's tennis player Lucy Dougherty has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for April 6, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, holds a 3.95 GPA in accounting.
Dougherty went a perfect 6-0 for UNCG last week as the Spartans pulled out three conference victories against Charleston Southern, Furman and Wofford. Against the Buccaneers, the Spartan sophomore easily won her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-1 before winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles with teammate Nitooli Wilkins.
In a matchup of two unbeaten teams in league play, Dougherty came way victories in both singles and doubles action to help UNCG defeat the Paladins, 4-3. Dougherty won her singles match against Michele Stanford 6-2, 6-4 and teamed up with Wilkins again for an 8-1 doubles victory.
Against Wofford, Dougherty pushed her singles record to 10-5 on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win and then proceeded to improve her doubles record with Wilkins to 13-2 with an 8-2 victory.
The Spartans return to the court this weekend when they travel to take on Georgia Southern on Friday and College of Charleston on Sunday.
Other nominees included Furman women's tennis player Monica Arguello, Georgia Southern baseball player Eric Phillips, Chattanooga men's golf player Stephan Jaeger and Western Carolina baseball player Ross Heffley.
