UNCG sweeps Georgia Southern to move into semifinals
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG took the early doubles point and then won the first three singles matches to propel the Spartans to a 4-0 win over Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday morning at the Champions Club.
UNCG (15-6) will meet Furman, who defeated Elon 4-0 in the quarterfinals, on Friday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals.
The Spartans started the match like they have in 17 of their 21 matches this year by taking the doubles point. The first-team All-SoCon duo of Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead came out and cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Fellow first-team honorees Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty clinched the doubles point for UNCG with an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Senior Mikayla Rogers stretched the Spartan lead to 2-0 with her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over Alessandra Dzuba. Georgia Southern (10-11) was put in a 3-0 hole as Macfarlane won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Whitehead clinched the win for UNCG at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to propel the Spartans into the semifinals.
The Spartans will now face third-seeded Furman on Friday at 10 a.m.
