Sutherland, Falcon to play for doubles flight title at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. and LOS ANGELES – Sophomore Devon Sutherland and freshman Stephanie Falcon will play for the C Doubles title at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday, while UNCG lost both of its matches at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in California on Saturday.

Sutherland and Falcon, the top seeds in the C Doubles flight, downed East Tennessee State's Giulia Andreazza and Jessica Brumit 8-3 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Dilara Yurtkuran and Annette Rios will play for the consolation title in the B Doubles flight after downing Elon's Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury, 9-7.

Alex Whitehead and Kayla Gammie will play for fifth in the A Doubles bracket after earning a walkover win over top-seeded Alex Bara and Ana Bara of VCU.

The Spartans didn't fare as well in singles play, with Gammie earning UNCG's lone win of the afternoon. Her 6-4, 6-2 win over Davidson's Blake Nickels put her into the semifinals of the F Singles flight, but she dropped a tough match to Wake Forest's Brigita Bercyte to fall into the third-place match. After Gammie won the first set 6-3, Bercyte rallied with wins of 6-1 and 6-2 to rally for the win.

In the A Singles bracket, Whitehead fell to Radford's Petra Dajevic 6-3, 6-1. Yurtkuran dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 match to Winthrop's Andressa Garcia in the B Singles flight and Rios fell 6-4, 6-3 to Virginia's Marjorie Baker in C Singles. Falcon suffered the first singles loss of her collegiate career with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 setback to UNC Wilmington's Alyssa Ritchie in D Singles and Sutherland lost a 6-3, 6-1 match to Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu in E Singles.

Meanwhile, at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship in Los Angeles, Niltooli Wilkins dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Virginia's Li Xi – ranked fifth among freshmen/newcomers by the ITA – in the pre-qualifying singles round. 

In doubles action, Southern Cal's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoe Scandalis dropped Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty 8-5 in the pre-qualifying round to end the Spartans' stay at the tournament.

UNCG returns to action Sunday at the Wake Forest Invitational.
