CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNCG's Annette Rios and Alex Whitehead teamed up for a first-round doubles win Thursday at the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Rios and Whitehead picked up an 8-4 win over Marija Dazalovic of Campbell and Charleston Southern's Alia Nour. Rios and Whitehead will now face UNC Wilmington's Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron at 8 a.m. Friday.
In singles play, Rios and Lucy Dougherty fell in the qualifying round to a pair of UNCW teammates. Rios dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to the Seahawks' Angie Sekely, while Dougherty fell in three sets to Christina Riley, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
In addition to Rios and Whitehead moving on in doubles play Friday, fifth-seeded Niltooli Wilkins and Dougherty kick off their doubles run with a match at 9:30 a.m. after earning a first-round bye.
Whitehead will play in the singles main draw at noon, while Wilkins hits the court at 5 p.m.
