CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Niltooli Wilkins picked up UNCG's lone win Saturday, but her singles run came to an end in the round of 16 as Spartans wrapped up play at the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Wilkins, the ninth seed, rebounded from a first-set loss to take down North Carolina's Laura Slater, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Wilkins suffered the reverse fate, winning her first set 6-2 against fifth-seeded Nelly Ciolkowski of Clemson before Ciolkowski rallied for the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-0. Ciolkowski is 83rd in the preseason ITA rankings.
Wilkins' win over Slater avenged a doubles loss from earlier the day. Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty, seeded fifth, fell to the Tar Heels' Slater and Jennifer Stone in the morning, 8-4, to see their run in the doubles draw come to an end in the round of 16.
Alex Whitehead was the only other Spartan in action on the day. She fell to Clemson's 32nd-ranked Keri Wong 6-1, 6-0 in singles play in the round of 32.
UNCG concludes fall play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill from Nov. 4-6.
