Spartans fall to No. 4 North Carolina to open spring slate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNCG opened its women's tennis spring season Wednesday, falling 7-0 to No. 4 North Carolina at the Tar Heels' Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In doubles play, UNCG's Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty lost their first match as a ranked tandem, as the 40th-ranked duo fell to Shinann Featherston and Caroline Price at No. 1, 8-3.
At No. 2, North Carolina's 43rd-ranked Zoe De Bruycker and Laura Slater took an 8-4 win over Alex Whitehead and Dilara Yurtkuran. Jennifer Stone and Haley Hemm completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Kayla Gammie and Devon Sutherland at No. 3.
In singles action, Wilkins gave 44th-ranked De Bruycker a fight at No. 1 but fell 7-5, 7-5. Featherston took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Yurtkuran at No. 2, and 55th-ranked Price topped Whitehead at No. 3 by the same score.
At No. 4, Hemm downed Dougherty 7-5, 6-0. North Carolina's Gina Suarez-Malaguti defeated Annette Rios 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 and Slater topped UNCG freshman Stephanie Falcon at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1.
North Carolina moved to 2-0 after topping Elon earlier in the day.
UNCG (0-1) returns to action Sunday when it faces Indiana on neutral ground in Durham, N.C. That match is set for 6 p.m.
