Whitehead named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG women's tennis player Alex Whitehead was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for March 14-20, the league office announced Wednesday.

Whitehead owns a 4.0 grade point average and is majoring in media studies. The junior from Victoria, Australia, went a combined 3-1 last week as UNCG (7-4, 2-0 SoCon) opened league play with road wins over Samford and Chattanooga.

Against Samford on Saturday, Whitehead teamed with Devon Sutherland for an 8-5 win over the Bulldogs' Rebecca Kirven and Madelie Janse Van Rensburg at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, she dropped a close 6-4, 6-4 decision to Stephanie N'tcha at No. 3.

The next day at Chattanooga, Whitehead and Sutherland clinched the doubles point for the Spartans with an 8-4 win at No. 2. Whitehead then cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kaylene Chadwell at No. 3 singles.

Whitehead becomes UNCG's second winner of the award this academic year, as Ashley Schnell of the cross country and track teams took the honor on Sept. 21 and Nov. 3. Whitehead is the first UNCG women's tennis player to take the award since teammate Lucy Dougherty on April 6, 2011.

UNCG resumes SoCon play at Davidson on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
