UNCG downs Georgia Southern 5-2 for fourth straight win

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Playing its first match in Greensboro in exactly a month, UNCG's women's tennis team topped Georgia Southern 5-2 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday to remain perfect in Southern Conference play.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in league play. Georgia Southern fell to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the SoCon.

UNCG got things started with a dominating performance in doubles. Kayla Gammie and Annette Rios pitched a shutout at No. 3, blanking the Eagles' Mimi Bollaci and Natalie Maffett, 8-0. The Spartans' 66th-ranked duo of Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins clinched the point with an 8-1 win over Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 1.

Devon Sutherland and Alex Whitehead completed the sweep at No. 2, dropping Scottie French and Cameron Williams, 8-2.

In singles play, Whitehead breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Allison Beeler at No. 2 to get things started. Dougherty followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Williams at No. 4 and Wilkins clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Garrido at No. 1. The win was Wilkins' 12th straight.

Annette Rios made it a 5-0 UNCG advantage with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Kitchen at No. 3.

The Eagles got on the board with a pair of super tiebreaker wins at the bottom of the lineup. Maffett broke up the shutout with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Sutherland at No. 6, and Alessandra Dzuba closed things out with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Stephanie Falcon at No. 5.

The Spartans, winners of four straight, will play at Appalachian State on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
