SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG redshirt junior Niltooli Wilkins has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month for March, the league office announced Tuesday. Wilkins also earned the honor in February.
Wilkins was a combined 16-2 in March, including a perfect 9-0 singles mark at No. 1. The Burnsville, Minn., native won six of her nine matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-5 win over Charleston Southern's Olga Makhova, a two-time Big South Conference Player of the Year.
Wilkins was a perfect 6-0 in SoCon play in March, dropping just one set in the month to league opponents. Wilkins personally clinched four of UNCG's eight wins on the month, picking up the decisive singles wins in victories over Longwood, Chattanooga, Davidson and Georgia Southern, the last three of which were in consecutive matches.
In doubles play, she and partner Lucy Dougherty reappeared in the national rankings, jumping back in at No. 66 for two weeks. UNCG's No. 1 duo was 7-2 in the month with a 5-1 SoCon record.
Wilkins and Dougherty clinched the doubles point in four matches in March, doing so against Longwood, Davidson, Georgia Southern and Wofford. The duo stormed to three wins by 8-1 scores or better, including an 8-0 win over Coastal Carolina's top duo en route to UNCG handing the Chanticleers their first team loss of the season.
UNCG climbed to the top of the SoCon standings in March, as the Spartans were 6-0 in league play in the month. Overall, UNCG went 8-1 in March.
Wilkins, who has won 15 straight singles matches, is 25-6 overall with a 15-1 dual mark. She needs just five more wins to surpass the school record of 29 set by Alejandra Guerra in 2009. Wilkins and Dougherty have amassed a 20-9 record together, including an 11-4 dual record.
The award is the fourth of its kind for Wilkins in her two-year UNCG career. In addition to winning it in consecutive months this season, she was the league's player of the month in February and March 2011, as well. Wilkins was also the league's player of the week on March 27 of this season.
UNCG returns to action Wednesday at Charlotte at 3 p.m.
