Women's Tennis Announces 2012-13 Schedule

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  UNCG women's tennis head coach Jeff Trivette announced a tough 2012-13 schedule Wednesday that includes three nationally ranked opponents from last season. The Spartans return seven veterans, including key player Niltooli Wilkins, and three newcomers to the 2012-13 team.

"This is one of the toughest schedules we have put together in quite some time," said Trivette. "We have North Carolina which finished No. 8 in last years rankings, Long Beach State which finished No. 36 nationally and College of Charleston which finished No. 63. On top of the nationally ranked schools, we are playing two more ACC teams, Wake Forest, NC State and Marshall University who have been historically top-35 schools. We have purposely put ourselves in this position in order to test our program nationally. We have a well-seasoned group and they are ready to prove themselves against these top programs."

The team will be facing nationally ranked teams North Carolina (No. 8), Long Beach State (No. 36) and the College of Charleston (No. 63) among other challenging opponents. All three teams participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament with the Tar Heals making the third round.

The Spartans open the fall season with half the team at the UVA Fall Invitational and the rest of the team at the Elon Fall Invitational Sept. 14-16 before taking a short trip to Wake Forest for the Wake Forest Fall Invitational (Oct. 5-7). UNCG will split the squad again at the Charlotte 49ers Invite and the Duckworth Fall Family Classic (Clemson, S.C.) Oct. 12-14. The team will end October with another trip to Wake Forest for the ITA Regional Championships (Oct. 18-22).

UNCG will end the fall season at UNC (Chapel Hill, N.C.) for the Kitty Harrison Invitational Nov. 9-11.

The Blue and Gold finished the 2012 spring season with an 18-6 record, including a 10-0 mark in league play that earned them the SoCon regular season championship.

The Spartans start off the 2013 campaign Jan. 23 against No. 8 UNC which went 24-7 last season. The team will then compete at NC State Feb. 7 before returning home to face Campbell (Feb. 9). UNCG heads next to Wake Forest Feb. 16 before it hosts Big West Conference Champion Long Beach State (No. 36) Feb. 22. The 49ers reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

The team starts off SoCon play Feb. 24 against Western Carolina at the UNCG tennis complex before heading to Huntington, W.Va. to face Marshall (March 1) and ODU (March 2). The Spartans return home to take on Chattanooga March 9 followed by Samford (March 10).

UNCG will start off a double-header hosting NC A&T followed by a trip to compete against Elon March 14. The Blue and Gold will head out on the road to face Gardner Webb March 16 before hosting three teams in a row: UNCW (March 20), Charlotte (March 25) and Davidson (March 26).

The Spartans travel to take on No. 63 College of Charleston March 29 hoping to defeat the Cougars which beat UNCG in the SoCon finals last season. The team ends the month facing Georgia Southern March 30. UNCG hosts Appalachian State April 2 before ending the regular season on the road with matches against Furman (April 6) and Wofford (April 7).

The 2013 Southern Conference Championship will be held April 18-21 in Elon, N.C.
