Women's Tennis Continues Play at UVA and Elon Invitationals
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) highlighted Day Two with a three set victory against Marshall's Karli Timko, 6-0, 6-7, 7-5 Saturday at the UVA Invitational.
"We had a tough second day, but we played very hard," said head coach Jeff Trivette. "I think there were a lot of positives that we can take away with us, considering it is the first tournament of the year. Dilara played a tough gritty match and I am very excited to see her in her first final."
Senior Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) fell to Salome Kvitashvili from VCU in the second round of singles, 6-3, 6-1. Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) lost in straight sets to Ivana Vukovic from Old Dominion University, 6-2, 7-5.
The Spartans didn't have much success in the second round of doubles. Wilkins and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) teamed up against UVA's doubles team Li Xi and Stephanie Nauta, but fell short with a score of 8-5.
In the consolation bracket Whitehead was defeated by Andrea Retolaza from Wake Forest, while Rios and Yurtkuran picked up an 8-3 doubles win over ODU's Juliana Pires and Ivana Vukovic.
Sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) won in two straight sets in the consolation bracket against NC State's Ekaterina Nekrasova, 6-2, 6-1 in the Elon Fall Invitational. Falcon followed that victory with another easy win against Cayla Cross from NC A & T, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain / Newcastle Under Lyme School) went 6-2, 6-1 in consolation against NC A & T's Kenya Colbert before defeating Colbert's teammate, Jayla Scott, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Jamie Grinberg won in two sets against Campbell's Natasha Afridi, 6-2, 6-3, but fell short against Viviana Stavreva from Elon losing 6-3, 6-1.
Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) and Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C. / Zebulon B. Vance) both lost in the first round of singles. Doubles team Falcon and Gammie lost to Elon's Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker 8-5 in the first round of doubles, while Ellis and Grinberg also fell short to Olesya Palko and Mia Ramic from NC Central, 8-5.
Due to an injury in Friday's tournament Sourneya Anane did not participate in Saturday's matches, automatically advancing Elon's doubles team Barbora Lazarova and Stavreva to Sunday's finals.
Play at the UVA and Elon Fall Invitationals conludes Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.
