Women's Tennis Dominate on Second Day of Kitty Harrison Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) won 6-1, 6-4 against Natalie Pintusava from Minnesota, before beating Virginia Tech's Ilinca Stoica, 6-4, 6-4 Saturday at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.
"We played with a lot of confidence today," said head coach Jeff Trivette. "We are starting to see consistent performances up and down our line up. It is how we hoped we would be playing at the end of the fall season."
Junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) picked up a third-set tiebreaking victory against Marshall's Maria Voscekova, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9-7), but lost to Tereza Birchacova from Marshall, 7-5, 6-1.
Senior Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) beat Minnesota's Aria Lambert, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8-6), before winning 6-1, 6-3 against Andrea Macchiavello from Norfolk State.
Sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) fell 6-1, 6-1 to Marianne Jodoin from Duke, before beating Paula Rincon-Otero from Minnesota, 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) took down Carol Kahoun from Virginia Tech, 7-5, 6-1.
Freshman Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) won 6-1, 6-3 against Jackie Lee from William and Mary, but lost 6-4, 6-3 to Minnesota's Pauline Gilbert.
Classmate Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain / Tile Hill Wood School) fell 6-1, 6-2 to Marshall's Dana Oppinger, before fighting to win 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (9-7) against Emily Lauten from Virginia Tech.
Freshman Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain / Newcastle Under Lyme School) won 6-2, 7-5 against Sydney Smith from William and Mary, before falling to Emilie Renault from Minnesota, 6-4, 7-6.
Sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) lost to Virginia Tech's Kelly Williford, but picked up a 7-6 (6-3), 6-4 win against Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic.
In doubles play, Wilkins and Whitehead beat Virginia Tech's Mita and Williford, before placing fifth after winning in their consolation finals round against Pintusava and Rincon-Otero from Minnesota, 8-5.
Yurtkuran and Grinberg won 8-6 to Van Berlo and Gealer from Maryland, but lost 8-5 to Virginia Tech's Ivanovic and Kahoun. Rios and Gammie fell 8-6 to Timko and Oppinger from Marshall, before losing 8-4 to Marshall's Broomfield and Ball.
Ellis and freshman Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C. / Zebulon B. Vance) lost 8-3 to Virginia Tech's Conley and Lauter, before falling to Sydney Smith from William and Mary, 6-0, 6-1.
Falcon and Anane were defeated by Birchacova and Gilbert, 8-1, before picking up an 8-5 win against Renault from Minnesota and Macchiavello from Norfolk State.
Play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational will conclude Sunday, Nov. 11, beginning at 9 a.m.
