UNCG finishes strong at SoCon Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, SC – The UNC Greensboro track and field team concluded action at the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans finished in seventh place on the men’s side while the women finished in 10th place. Western Carolina claimed the team titles on both sides.

The UNCG women had a good showing in the mile, placing three in the top 20. Freshman Tiffany Garber was UNCG’s top finisher with a 16th place showing with a time of 5:29.38 while Sherrika Jordan finished in 17th place with a time of 5:29.49. Carly Magin set a new personal record with a time of 5:33.22 and school record holder Jess Weber rounded out the Spartan finishers with a time of 5:59.56.

Junior Mary Ann Rutz also set a new personal record in the 5000m run. The Hope Mills, NC, native finished in 16th place with a time of 19:06.73, shaving nearly 22 seconds of her previous personal best of 19:28.68.

The UNCG men also had a strong finish to conclude the indoor season. UNCG had three top 20 finishes in the mile run and was led by Andy Clyne’s 13th place finish with a time of 4:25.90. Anthony Savoia and Ryan Rodd placed in 16th and 20th place with times of 4:28.77, a new personal record, and 4:37.36, respectively.

In the 5000m run Xavier Rutz and Josh Wyatt both finished in the top 10. Rutz led the way with a ninth place finish with a time of 15:15.97 while school record holder Josh Wyatt took 10th place with a time of 15:26.02. Ramon Jobson Brown rounded out the day for UNCG with a 15th place finish in the long jump with a jump of 5.60 meters.

The Spartans will take some time off before opening the outdoor season at the Wake Forest Open March 21-22.
