Savoia named All-SoCon on day one of SoCon Championships
STATESBORO, GA – AJ Savoia’s second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase earned him All-SoCon honors on Saturday afternoon to lead UNC Greensboro at the 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Savoia’s time of 9:25.24 was the best time this season on the team and his time from last season is the only better time in school history.
Junior Terry Wyatt and sophomore Andy Clyne qualified for the 800-meter finals, which will be run on Sunday afternoon. Wyatt took second in the prelims with a time of 1:54.47, while Clyne ran a time of 1:55.82 to finish in eighth place.
Two season-highs were set by the Spartans on day one as well. Jeremey Cannon’s fifth place finish in the javeling throw was just .04 meters from breaking his own school record with a throw of 52.54 meters. Ramon Jobson-Brown set a team-high mark this season with his leap of 6.36 meters in the long jump.
On the women’s side, Laura Bocko finished tenth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 12:08.11 was the best time in that event this season by almost seven seconds and it was also the second-best time in school history.
UNCG will resume competition on Sunday as the Spartans wrap-up action on day two of the 2009 SoCon Championships.
