Sumney earns All-Freshman on final day of SoCon Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Joey Thompson was narrowly edged out in the 1,500 meters to finish in second place, while TJ Wyatt also came home with a second place finish in the 800 meters as the duo were named All-Southern Conference on the final day of the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Thompson ran a season-best 3:53.85 in the 1,500 meters, but Brandon Hudgins from Appalachian State beat him at the stripe by just .34 seconds, as Thompson finished in second place. For his efforts, he was named to the All-SoCon team for that event.
Competing in the 800 meter finals, Wyatt also had a nice day as he finished in second place in a time of 1:52.11. That time was a new personal-best for him, which is also the second-fastest time in school history, and earned him All-SoCon honors.
Taylor Day was named to the All-Freshman team for the second time in as many days as he earned that honor in the 1,500 meters with his time of 4:06.34.
On the women's side, Shaina Sumney finished in sixth place in the 1,500 meters with her time of 4:47.22. That time set a new personal-best for her by .15 seconds and earned her All-Freshman honors.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team also had a nice afternoon as their team of 4:07.68 set a new school record by almost three seconds.
The men's team finished the championships in a tie for seventh place with Furman, while the women's team came in 11th place.
UNCG will continue to attempt to qualify for the NCAA Regional competition as they will resume competition at the Duke Twilight on Sunday, May 9.
