Schnell named SoCon Track Athlete of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Ashley Schnell has been named Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performances for all meets, March 11-13. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Schnell, a Lincoln, Neb., native, won the 800m at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational over the weekend with a time of 2:12.69. Schnell led for the majority of the race despite windy conditions to take the title by three seconds.
Her mark also set the UNCG school record, set three years ago, by five seconds.
Schnell's time in the event is currently the top time in the NCAA East Region by .63 seconds and is also seventh nationally.
Other top performers this week included:
Elon junior Amy Salek – Finished first in the 400m with a time of 55.43 and third in the 200m with a time of 25.21 at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational. Also ran anchor for the 4 x 400m relay team that took first place.
Wofford freshman Katie Kessler – Placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:18.10 at the Palmetto Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
