TOWSON, Md. – UNCG runner Ashley Schnell has added another award this year as she was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.
She is the first student-athlete from UNCG to earn the distinction of being an Academic All-American since Pat Currin, a pitcher on the baseball team, accomplished second-team honors in 2006.
Schnell, a junior from Lincoln, Neb., has a perfect 4.00 GPA in music at UNCG with a concentration in instrumental performance.
In the fall, Schnell claimed top individual honors at the Southern Conference Cross Country Championship to earn SoCon Women's Runner of the Year honors, as well as being named first-team All-SoCon. She would go on to become the first-ever runner at UNCG to earn All-Region honors in cross country.
At the conclusion of the cross country season, Schnell earned All-Academic cross country status by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and was named Academic All-SoCon, as well.
Schnell continued her success during the indoor track and field season as she claimed the Southern Conference title in the 3,000 meters and was also a part of the distance medley relay team that also won a SoCon championship.
During the outdoor track season, Schnell claimed the SoCon title in the 1,500 meters and became the first-ever female runner from UNCG to qualify for the NCAA East Regional as she earned a bid in the 5,000 meters.
In addition to setting numerous school records throughout the year, Schnell also earned Academic All-SoCon honors in indoor track and outdoor track.
