Schnell earns USTFCCA All-Academic team honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's Ashley Schnell added one final award to her 2010-11 season as she was named to the All-Academic team for the track & field season, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday.

Schnell was one of 663 female student-athletes from around the nation to receive the honor, but was one of just five runners from the Southern Conference to earn the distinction.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

Schnell qualified for the award after finishing the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA in music with a concentration in instrumental performance and advanced to the NCAA East Regional in the 5,000 meters.

Earlier in the summer, Schnell became the first Spartan since 2006 to be name an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
