Chelimo, Schnell lead UNCG at the Hokie Invitational
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Paul Chelimo won the men's mile race and Ashley Schnell did the same in the women's mile to lead UNCG on the first day of the Hokie Invitational on Friday.
This is the second week in a row that Chelimo and Schnell have won their respective races after they both won the 800 meter titles at the Dick Taylor Invitational last weekend.
Schnell shattered her previous school record in the mile that she set last year at the Meyo Invitational by 12 seconds. Her time of 4:48.92 was also 12 seconds faster than her nearest competition. Kerry Hartman finished third in the mile after her time of 5:02.57 set a new personal-best by four seconds.
In the 3,000 meters, Shaina and Chelsea Sumney led the way for the Spartans as they finished in third and fourth, respectively. Shaina's time of 9:49.66 crushed her previous-best time by 35 seconds, while Chelsea also set a new personal-best by 29 seconds after running a 9:53.44.
On the men's side, Chelimo continued his impressive run by claiming the title in the mile after running a 4:08.27. He won the race by over four seconds and broke teammate Joey Thompson's school record by two seconds that he set two years ago. Thompson finished seventh in the mile in a time of 4:15.60.
Paul Katam came in sixth place in the 3,000 meter race after setting a new personal-best by 17 seconds after running an 8:27.40.
The Spartans will resume competition at the Hokie Invitational on Saturday at 12 p.m.
