Sumney earns SoCon Track Athlete of the Week honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Shaina Sumney has been named the Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

It was the second consecutive week that a Spartan has won the award as Ashley Schnell captured the honor after the first week of competition.

Sumney, a Washington, Pa., native, posted a 9:48.92 time in the 3,000 meters at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., over the weekend. Her time leads the league by four seconds this season and was also a new personal best by 35 seconds.

UNCG returns to action on Feb.3 at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Other top performers this week included:

The Citadel junior Micah Wessinger – Wessinger won the 600m race at the Captain's Invitational at Christopher Newport in a time of 1:38.18. She was also the lead leg of the school record 4x800 and 4x400 relays.

Georgia Southern junior Jasmine Billings – Billings finished eighth in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.14 at the Gator Invitational.

Samford junior Holly Benson—Benson ran a 4:54.59 in the mile at the Auburn Invite, moving into third all-time in Samford history.
