Indoor Track And Field Opens Season Saturday At Wake Forest
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG indoor track and field season gets underway Saturday as the Spartans travel across the Triad for the Wake Forest Invitational. The day's events begin at 9 a.m. at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The men's program will be led by sophomores Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) andAbraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) Saturday. Katam posted a personal-best time of 4:18.03 in the mile last season at the Dick Taylor Invite and a personal-best time of 14:19.86 for the 5,000-meter race at the Meyo Invitational.
Kemboi earned All-Freshman honors last year in the Southern Conference in his first indoor track season in the 3,000-meter race. He posted a time of 9:35.46 last season at the Fast Track Invite. Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) was tabbed All-Freshman in the SoCon in the 5,000-meter event, including a personal-best time of 15:38.53 in the 5,000-meter race.
Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) will not race this weekend due to injury. Chelimo earned All-America honors in the 3,000-meter race while also earning SoCon championship honors in the mile run.
The UNCG women will be led by Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) during the indoor season. Sumney placed second in the 5,000-meter race at the SoCon Championships with a time of 16:51.25 to earn All-League honors.
Junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) ran a personal-best time of 10:48.63 in the 3,000-meter race last season at the Fast Track Invite. Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) posted a personal-best time of 2:17.21 at the SoCon Championships in the 800-meter race.
