UNCG womens volleyball team tabbed 10th in SoCon pre-season poll
SPARTANBURG, SC – The UNC Greensboro women’s volleyball team has been selected 10th in the Southern Conference pre-season poll, according to the 11 league head coaches.
College of Charleston received nine of the 11 possible first place votes to take the top spot in the poll with 98 points. Appalachian State was selected second, garnering two first-place votes (91) while Georgia Southern (84), Furman (70), and Davidson (59) round out the top five. Elon (55), Chattanooga (51), and Western Carolina (37) were picked sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively with Wofford (27), UNCG (23) and The Citadel (13) rounding out the poll.
The Cougars also paced the way with five selections on the preseason all-conference squad. Appalachian State and Davidson had two selections each, while Georgia Southern, Chattanooga, Elon and Furman had one player on the all-conference squad.
The Spartans will open the 2005 season with a trip to Richmond, VA for the VCU Tournament, hosted by Virginia Commonwealth on September 2-3. The Spartans will take on East Tennessee State at 4:30 pm on Friday in the season-opener, before facing Radford and VCU on Saturday.
UNCG’s home opener will take place on September 13 when the Spartans face in-state rival Campbell for a 7 pm match. UNCG will host The Citadel in its Southern Conference opener on September 20. That match will get underway at 7 pm.
First-year head coach Shawn Garus, who was a successful tenure as an assistant coach at Texas Tech and San Francisco, welcomes back five starters from a young 2004 squad that featured just one senior.
