Wofford claims 3-1 win over UNCG in SoCon womens volleyball action
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro lost in four games to Wofford in Southern Conference women’s volleyball action Sunday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium. The Terriers won the contest 3-1 by scores of 30-28, 30-28, 26-30, 30-22.
Wofford (8-7, 3-3 SoCon) claimed the early lead in the match as the visiting Terriers won game one by a score of 30-28. UNCG (2-15, 1-6 SoCon) opened up an early 12-8 lead on a kill by senior Lauren Richards. The Spartans maintained a three-point margin for most of the match and later extended their lead to five at 21-16 on a Wofford service error. With the score 27-23 in the Spartans’ favor, Wofford finished the game with a 7-1 run capped off with a kill by Brittany Thompson to claim the game for the Terriers.
The Terriers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match, winning game two by an identical score of 30-28. Wofford jumped out to a quick five point lead at 10-5 on a Spartan attack error to take early control of the match. UNCG, however, rallied to within two points at 19-17 on a service ace by Lauren Keiser, but Wofford again extended their lead to five points at 23-18 on a Rhea DeJesus service ace. Following a UNCG timeout, the Spartans responded with a 9-4 run to tie the match at 27 on a Wofford attack error. After Wofford took a one point lead, the Spartans once again tied the game at 28, only to have the Terriers claim the next two points to win the match on a Liz Sheets kill.
UNCG recorded 16 kills and committed but four errors to take game three 30-26. A back-and-forth contest for the first 10 points, the Spartans took a three point lead at 16-13 on a kill by Hilary Overby. Wofford tied the game at 19 on a kill by Thompson, but the Spartans claimed the next two points highlighted by a kill from Keiser. Wofford took the lead briefly at 22-21 on another kill by Thompson, but UNCG closed the game on a 5-2 run to win the game by a four point margin.
Wofford won game four 30-22 and prevailed three games to one to claim victory in the match. UNCG held an 11-8 lead before Wofford reeled off an 8-0 run to take an 16-11 lead on a UNCG attack error. The Spartans would get within four at 20-16 on an Overby kill before Wofford extended their lead to 10 points at 27-17 on a Spartan error. Christal Carey clinched the game and match for the Terriers with her kill for Wofford’s 30th point.
Keiser led UNCG with 11 kills while Alysia Rosvold paced the Spartans with 19 digs. Adrian Hicks dolled out 35 assists to lead UNCG. Thompson and Carey led Wofford in kills as the duo posted 14 apiece. Carey also recorded a match-high 23 digs while DeJesus dished out a match-high 36 helpers.
UNCG visits first-place College of Charleston in a SoCon match Tuesday night at 7 pm in Charleston, SC. Meanwhile, Wofford travels to Greenville, SC to take on Furman Tuesday night at 7 pm.
