SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro
sophomore Kayren Finney has been named the Southern
Conference's Volleyball Player of the Week for her
outstanding performance in the Spartans' three wins last
week.
The middle blocker from Danville, VA hit .423 last week as UNCG
went 3-0 with wins over Elon, Furman and Wofford. Finney had 15
blocks, an average of 1.25 per set, and 37 kills against just seven
errors. She had 15 kills in the five-set win at Furman, followed by
13 kills in a three-set sweep at
Wofford.
It is the second time this season Finney has earned the weekly honor. She also received the Conference's weekly honor on October 21. She is the first Spartan to earn Player of the Week honors twice in the same season since UNCG joined the Southern Conference prior to the 1997 season.
For the season, Finney is now hitting .329 with 294 kills (2.85 per set), recording double-figure kills in nine of her last 10 matches. She also has 124 blocks (1.20 per set), which ranks eighth on UNCG's single-season list. A Spartan has not hit better than .300 in a season since 1995.
The three wins gave UNCG its third consecutive 20-win season, something the program had not done since the mid 1990s. In addition, UNCG tied a school record with its 12 conference win of the season (1985, 12-0 in Dixie Conference).
The Spartans, 20-9 overall and 12-4 in the Southern Conference, close out the regular season with a home weekend against Chattanooga on Friday and Samford on Saturday.
