Spartans wrap up Blue/Gold scrimmage on Saturday night

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Olivia Humphries had a match-high 16 kills and senior Caley Redden added a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs for the Blue team as they defeated the Gold team, 3-1, on Saturday evening in Fleming Gymnasium.

The Blue team took the first set 25-19 before the Gold team rallied to tie the match at one by winning the second set, 25-17. The Blue team responded though by winning the final two sets 25-18 and 16-14, respectively.

The Blue team consisted of Alissa Beaudway, Olivia Humphries, Lara Keyes, Kimiko Naito, Caley Redden, Karen Stedman and Savannah Tomlinson. Assistant coach Laura Tomes also played for the Blue team.

Billi Baker, Karrian Chambers, Samantha Deutchman, Kayren Finney, Ari Lysacek and Kellie Orewiler comprised the Gold team. Student assistant coach Emily Lindborg also participated for the Gold team.

Chambers paced the Gold team as she had a team-high 11 kills and 16 digs for a double-double, while Lindborg added 10 kills. Lysacek added a match-high 28 assists and 19 digs for a double-double for the Gold team.

The two teams came out battling in the first set that saw the two sides change leads four times and have eight ties. The Blue team held on to a narrow 15-14 lead midway through the set, but then won eight of the next 10 points in order to jump out to a 23-16 advantage. The Blue team took the set, 25-19, on a kill by Humphries.

The Gold team fought back though in the second set as they led from wire-to-wire as they capped off the set with a service ace from Lysacek. An 8-1 run in the set, sparked by four attack errors from the Blue team, helped the Gold team take advantage in the set.

The Blue team reversed the roles in the third set as they were the team to lead wire-to-wire. A pair of kills by Humphries and Redden helped spark the Blue team to an early 7-2 lead in the set. The Gold team fought back to make the score 15-13 midway through the set, but the Blue team hung on and pulled away late as they won the set, 25-18.

In the fourth and final set, the Blue team once again took the early lead as a block by Humphries and Tomes gave the team a 7-3 lead. The Gold team fought back to tie the match at 14-14, but a kill by Redden and an attack error by the Gold team gave the set to the Blue team, 16-14.

The Spartans will open its regular season next weekend as they face Navy at 1 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Spartan Classic on the campus of Norfolk State University.
