SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named UNCG's Kellie Orewiler as the Freshman of the Week for the matches played the week of Nov. 8-15, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. The players of the week are voted on by the league office.
The Mansfield, Ohio native had 50 digs for UNCG in just three matches over the past week. In a mid-week match against High Point, the freshman had 11 digs, but elevated her game in the two SoCon wins on the weekend.
In the sweep of Western Carolina, the libero had a match-high 21 digs and followed it up with 18 digs in a four-set win over Appalachian State on Saturday. She averaged 4.55 digs per set on the week, but improved her average to 5.57 digs per set in the two conference matches. Orewiler also had four aces on the week.
Orewiler was also named Freshman of the Week in the fourth week of the season.
Also nominated for Freshman of the Week were College of Charleston's Madelyn McGinnis, Furman's Sarah McCarthy, Chattanooga's Andrea Johnson and Western Carolina's Kelcie Randazzo.
The Spartans will return to action on Friday at the Southern Conference Championships in Boone, N.C. UNCG, the two seed in the North Division, will face Furman, the three seed in the South Division, at 10 a.m.
