FAIRFAX, Va. – Karrian Chambers had a team-high 12 kills and senior captain Ariel Newman added 11 of her own as UNCG defeated Navy, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18), on the final day of the Patriot Invitational on Sunday. Newman earned All-Tournament team honors for her efforts over the weekend.
The Spartans went 2-1 at the tournament to improve their record to 3-4, while Navy fell to 0-6 on the early season.
In addition to her 12 kills, Chambers had 11 digs for her second double-double of the tournament. Kellie Orewiler had an amazing 32 digs for UNCG. It was the most digs by a Spartan since Catherine Hanners had 39 against Furman on Sept. 29, 2007. Ari Lysacek also had a double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs.
Carolyn Ewert had a match-high 13 kills for the Midshipmen and 11 digs for a double-double. Erin Fortner added a match-high 34 assists.
The two teams were tied at six in the early parts of the first set, but the Spartans used a 9-3 run to open up a 15-9 lead. A kill by Newman capped off the set for UNCG as they took the set, 25-18.
The Midshipmen came back in the second set to tie the team score at one. It looked as if Navy would cruise to winning the set as they had set point at 24-16, but UNCG rattled off six points in a row to cut it down to 24-22. After a Navy timeout, Christy Rapp delivered a kill to take the set, 25-22.
The third set was close throughout as UNCG held on to a narrow 20-19 lead late. The Spartans then got two blocks and a kill from Lysacek during a 5-1 run to win the set, 25-20.
In the final set, UNCG ran out to an early 10-4 lead before cruising to take the set, 25-18.
The Spartans return to action next weekend as they travel to Orlando, Fla. for the UCF Tournament.
