UNCG to hold Fight Like a Spartan festivities this week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG will join forces with The Women's Hospital of Greensboro this week to help raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer during the Spartans' annual Fight Like a Spartan weekend.

The Spartan volleyball team will raise funds in a variety of ways in order to donate to the Cone Health Mammography Scholarship Fund. This fund is used to provide an average of 500 health screenings annually for underserved women in the community.

The week's festivities will kick off on Thursday and Friday as the team will participate in its Paint it Pink event. The event will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day in the EUC Commons. There will be face painting and pink hairspray at the event for students, faculty and staff for $2 with all proceeds going to the fund. There will also be pink hair feathers for $12 that UNCG student Alayna Ward will be doing.

The highlight of the week will be the pair of matches the Spartans will play. UNCG will host Davidson in Fleming Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Friday in the first match of the week. The Spartans will turn around on Saturday and play reigning SoCon Tournament Champions Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.

The UNCG Sapphires, an all-female a cappella group will sing the national anthem prior to both contests and will also perform during intermission. Pink Fight Like a Spartan t-shirts will also be sold at the matches for $5 and pink pom poms will be given away at the door. During Saturday's match, there will be pink face painting and pink poster painting available for fans.

All fans attending the matches this weekend are encouraged to wear pink.
