Q&A with Volleyball's Olivia Humphries: Studying in Spain
Redshirt junior Olivia Humphries of the UNCG volleyball team had the opportunity to study abroad over the summer in Spain. UNCGspartans.com was able to recently ask her a little bit about her experience.
1. Why did you choose Spain as a place to study abroad?
I chose Spain because I am minoring in Spanish and I love the Spanish language. I also really wanted to go to Europe. The program I was apart of was a summer program. If I could have stayed for a whole semester, or even a whole year, I would have but with volleyball to come back to, the summer program was all I could do.
2. What were some of your favorite foods Spain had to offer?
It's interesting actually. I really didn't think the food in Spain was anything extraordinary. My mom came to visit me after the program and we traveled around Europe together. We had some really good food in Italy and in Austria!
3. Was there a favorite place you visited while in Spain?
Barcelona was one of my favorite places. A few of us from the group went there on one of our free weekends when we didn't have class. We saw some beautiful cathedrals and visited some amazing art museums. Another reason it was one my favorite places was because we stayed right on the beach!
4. How much Spanish did you know before going?
I had taken up to SPA 351. I knew enough Spanish to be able to have everyday conversations, but I lacked the confidence to speak comfortably. The trip to spain helped me get over the confidence issue.
5. What advice would you give to other students who are consideringstudying abroad?
Do it! Go while you have the chance. Go explore the world. There is so much to see and learn!
