Volleyball To Promote Breast Cancer Awareness This Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team encourages the Greensboro community to "Fight Like a Spartan" this weekend as the team takes on Southern Conference North Division rivals Samford and Chattanooga Friday and Saturday at Fleming Gymnasium.
"We are very excited about hosting the Fight Like a Spartan matches this weekend," head coach Patrick Nicholas said. "It's a very important cause for the team and me. I lost my mother to breast cancer and there are a number of players whose families have been affected. Being able to help so many women get the basic testing they need is a great start in the fight to cure this horrible disease. The first step is to get tested and the Moses Cone Scholarship Mammography Fund allows women to receive the help they need."
The Spartans will raise funds in a variety of ways in order to donate to the Cone Health Mammography Scholarship Fund. This fund is used to provide an average of 500 health screenings annually for underserved women in the community.
Both matches are slated to begin at 6 p.m. and Fleming Gym will be adorned with pink balloon towers and banners, among other decorations.
The team is also partnering with the UNCG dining services during the month of October to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Players will attend the annual Dining Services pink luncheon on October 4th and Dining Services will be present at the volleyball games to collect pink Yoplait lids for the Susan G. Komen foundation.
The Spartan G's will perform during the intermission between the second and third sets of Friday's match against the Bulldogs. Pink merchandise will be sold at both contests, including pink t-shirts, koozies and other UNCG gear. Saturday night, the first 75 fans will receive a free UNCG pink t-shirt. Admission is free to all fans for all volleyball matches. Be sure to come out and support both of these UNCG departments as they raise money and awareness for breast cancer awareness month!
Spartan fans attending this weekend's matches are encouraged to wear pink.
