UNCG women tied for seventh in SoCon Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro's women's cross country team finished in a tie for seventh along with College of Charleston and Western Carolina in the Southern Conference Cross Country Preseason Poll, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

The men's team was picked to finish in a three-way tie with Davidson and Furman to finish third.

Returning Southern Conference champions Appalachian State was picked to finish first in the men's poll after receiving eight of the 11 first place votes to total 97 points. Chattanooga received two first place votes and 91 points to finish in second. Davidson, who received one first place vote, Furman and UNC Greensboro all tied for third place with 68 total points. Elon (58 points), Samford (55 points) and Western Carolina (41 points) were tabbed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. College of Charleston was picked to finish ninth after receiving 28 points and The Citadel received 21 points to finish 10th. Wofford rounded out the poll with 10 points to finish in 11th place.

In the women's poll, 2008 runner-up Samford edged Chattanooga by receiving 118.5 points, including 7.5 first-place votes. Chattanooga received the remaining 4.5 first-place votes to garner 111.5 votes to finish second. Furman was picked third with 94 points and Elon received 86 points to finish fourth. Appalachian State and Davidson both received 84 points to finish in a tie for fifth. UNC Greensboro received 51 points along with College of Charleston and Western Carolina to form a three-way tie for seventh place. The Citadel (28 points), Georgia Southern (23 points) and Wofford (12 points) completed the women's poll in 10th, 11th and 12th place.

UNCG kicks off its 2008 cross country season on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Wake Forest Relays in Winston-Salem, N.C.
