Schnell earns SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG's Ashley Schnell, a junior cross country runner, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6, the league office announced today. It was the second time she has earned the honor in the past three weeks.
The Lincoln, Neb., native carries a 4.0 GPA in instrumental performance.
Schnell was named women's SoCon Runner of the Week on Tuesday. She was also named Student-Athlete of the Week Sept. 22.
Last weekend, Schnell set a UNCG school record with her time of 17:37 at the Greater Louisville Classic. Her time was about 25 seconds faster than the previous record.
Schnell finished 18th in a very competitive field that included many of the top teams in the region. Her efforts helped the Spartans to a 14th place finish as a team.
It was the first time that a UNCG student-athlete has won the award twice in one season, since Joey Thompson accomplished the feat last season. He earned the award for the first time during cross country season and again later in the year during outdoor track & field season.
