SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG runner Ashley Schnell was honored by the Southern Conference on Friday as she was named the SoCon Athlete of the Month for the month of October. The athletes were nominated by each member institution and voted on by the conference office.
The junior from Lincoln, Neb., ran times of 17:37, 17:48 and 17:39 in her three meets on 5K courses during the month of October. Each time was faster than the UNCG school record.
She started the month by breaking the school record in the 5k at the Greater Louisville Classic. Her time of 17:37.07 broke the previous school record set in 2003 by over 15 seconds. For her efforts at that event, she was named SoCon Runner of the Week and SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week.
She wrapped up the month by claiming top individual honors at the Southern Conference Championships and helping lead her team to a third-place finish. She was also named SoCon Runner of the Year at the event and earned first-team All-SoCon accolades.
The Spartans will return to competition on Nov. 13 as they travel to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship.
