GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG swept cross-town rival North Carolina A&T 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17) in its first match of the day before falling to tournament champion Evansville 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) on the final day of the UNCG Invitational on Saturday.
The Spartans are now 1-3 after the first weekend of competition, while Evansville improved to 4-0 and North Carolina A&T dropped to 0-4.
In the first match of the day, Karrian Chambers led the Spartan attack as she recorded a match-high 10 kills, while Morgan Freeman added eight of her own. Andrea Evans and Jenea Daniels had six kills apiece for the Aggies.
Ariel Newman, Ari Lysacek and Chambers all had nine kills against Evansville to lead the team. Lysacek, who earned All-Tournament team honors, nearly had a triple-double as she also recorded 16 assists and eight digs. Emily McMurtrey had a double-double in the loss with 16 assists and 12 digs.
Against North Carolina A&T, the Spartans opened the match on a 7-2 run, thanks in part to a pair of kills from Chambers. UNCG would stretch its lead out to 16-6 on a kill by Holland Hoefnagel en route to claiming the first set, 25-16.
In the second set, UNCG would again take control early as a service ace from Freeman put her team ahead 8-3. The Spartans would lead by as many as eight in the set, but the Aggies mounted a late rally to pull within 20-16. UNCG would go on a 5-2 run to end the set to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The final set of the match was the closest of the match as there were nine ties and five lead changes. With the two sides tied at 10, UNCG used a 7-1 run to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. A kill by Chelsea Evans gave the Spartans the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
In the final match of the tournament, the two teams traded points in the early going, but the Purple Aces went on a 5-1 run to open up an 11-7 lead. Evansville would continue to increase its advantage by taking the opening set, 25-17.
The Purple Aces carried that momentum into the second set by jumping out to a commanding 16-7 lead. UNCG would mount a rally late in the set to pull within 21-18, but the Spartans ran out of steam and dropped the set, 25-19.
UNCG came out of the intermission with renewed vigor as the two sides were knotted at 10 in the early going. The Purple Aces then went on a 5-1 run en route to winning the set, 25-17.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend as they travel to play in the George Mason Patriot Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
