Randy Phillips Selected to the Jamaican Davis Cup Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG men's tennis student-athlete Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) was selected to compete in the Davis Cup as part of the Jamaican national team July 20-25 in Panama City, Panama.

Phillips, a first team All-Conference selection in 2015, had a stellar senior season going 26-8 overall and was 17-4 during the spring season. His 26 wins were the third highest in school history playing all his matches at No. 1 singles. Phillips also had a 17-11 doubles mark earning All-Conference honors three straight years in doubles.

“Randy worked very hard his senior year,” head coach Jeff Trivette said. “He probably had the best spring of his collegiate career. In my opinion, Randy should have been the Player of the Year in the Southern Conference. This is a culmination of all of that hard work paying off. He has a chance to do very well for Jamaica. I am very excited to follow his play and see him succeed.”

Phillips tried out and successfully made the Jamaican national team to compete in the Group III stage at the Davis Cup starting July 20-25.

It is a round-robin format with four teams in Pool A and five teams in Pool B. The winner of Pool A will playoff against the runner-up of Pool B and the winner of Pool B will playoff against the runner-up of Pool A to determine which two nations will advance to Americas Zone Group II in 2016.

The teams competing are: Bahamas, Bermuda, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica.
