MESSAGE FROM BRIAN MACKIN, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dear Spartan Community,

I am honored to introduce the 2025–2030 UNCG Athletics Strategic Plan: Honoring Our Legacy, Championing the Future.

This strategic plan is the result of months of thoughtful collaboration with student-athletes, coaches, staff, university leaders, alumni and community stakeholders. It represents both a confirmation of our values and decisive action as we navigate the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics.

At the center of this plan is our Core Purpose: We discover and develop champions in life. This commitment influences every decision we make and is critical in the experiences we create for our student-athletes in and out of competition.

We have organized our efforts around five strategic priorities that will guide us through the next five years:

  1. Student-Athlete Well-Being and Experience
    We will provide an impactful environment for student-athlete well-being and development through academic, athletic, and personal experiences.
  2. Financial Resources
    We will implement a financial plan that prioritizes securing resources, value-added strategies, and financial sustainability toward the success of our department.
  3. Branding and Engagement
    We will enhance our strategic and collaborative partnerships across the University and Greensboro communities that raises the visibility and engagement of UNCG Athletics.
  4. Culture
    We will maintain a championship mentality authentic to the UNCG Athletics vision, by fostering an environment of consistency, inclusiveness, integrity, transparency, and trust.
  5. Competitive Landscape
    We will create and sustain an environment dedicated to competing for conference championships and postseason success within the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics.

This plan reflects the culture of our department: grounded in teamwork, responsibility, integrity, excellence, and a steadfast commitment to student-athlete well-being. It also serves as our North Star so that every Spartan has the opportunity to thrive and succeed both academically, athletically, and personally.

We recognize that achieving this vision requires a combined effort and shared belief in the power of Spartan Athletics. Whether you are a student-athlete, alumni, fan, faculty, staff member, or partner, your continued support will be critical in bringing this plan to life.

Strategic Priorities:
With focus on five strategic priorities, we will move UNCG Athletics through transformational times while honoring our past and preparing for the future. 

SA Well Being & Experience 2c

1. Student-Athlete Well-Being and Experience 
Goal Statement: We will provide an impactful environment for student-athlete well-being and development through academic, athletic, and personal experiences.

Focus on the eight dimensions of wellness (social, physical, emotional, cultural, environmental, intellectual, career, and financial) for every student-athlete by providing resources, education, and programming. 

  • Strategy #1: Identify and assess current Athletics resources available to UNCG student-athletes.
  • Strategy #2: Identify and assess campus resources available to UNCG students.
  • Strategy #3: Identify and assess community resources available to UNCG student-athletes.
  • Strategy #4: Evaluate all available resources and create an annual programming plan for the eight dimensions of wellness.

Create an environment focused on the overall experience for student-athletes.

  • Strategy #1: Develop an Athletics communication plan to promote on-campus events and student organizations.

Create an environment to support and nurture academic success and life advancement. 

  • Strategy #1: Evaluate academic support systems and staffing for student-athletes to achieve graduation.
  • Strategy #2: Develop and integrate strategies to prepare student-athletes for life post-graduation.

2. Financial Resources
Goal Statement: We will implement a financial plan that prioritizes securing resources, value-added strategies, and financial sustainability toward the success of our department. 

Ensure financial stability by increasing and diversifying funding resources.

  • Strategy #1: Determine funding needed to operate at our desired level of competitive excellence.
  • Strategy #2: Expand Spartan Club donor base and increase philanthropic contributions. 
  • Strategy #3: Expand sponsorship opportunities by leveraging purchasing power of Athletics and University to decrease expenses and increase revenue opportunities. 
  • Strategy #4: Identify potential partnerships and activate resources available through Campus entities, NCAA, and government. 
  • Strategy #5: Enhance the performance and use of current athletic facilities, while strategically evaluating and capitalizing on future opportunities to increase revenue.
  • Strategy #6: Enhance University Licensing program (managed by Athletics) to create more and new opportunities to promote UNCG goods and increase royalty revenue. 

Optimize the use of existing and future resources to maximize value. 

  • Strategy #1: Streamline operational processes and expenses.
  • Strategy #2: Educate University about the value of investing in Athletics and the benefits to UNCG from having a successful athletics program.
  • Strategy #3: Allocate resources to ensure baseline experience for all student-athletes and maximize return on investment for revenue generating sports.
  • Strategy #4: Consider and mitigate potential risks to the Athletic Department.
  • Strategy #5: Evaluate the financial, social, and operational impacts of changing sport offerings or conference realignment for UNCG Athletics.

Develop a long-term financial model to support current and future athletic programs.

  • Strategy #3: Create a method of Evaluation, Accountability and Communication for the Strategic Plan progress.

Goal Statement: We will enhance our strategic and collaborative partnerships across the University and Greensboro communities that raises the visibility and engagement of UNCG Athletics. 

Clearly define athletic marks used on an off campus.

  • Strategy #1: Ensure broad, consistent use of Athletic marks, on and off campus.
  • Strategy #2: Create and implement a comprehensive branding initiative encompassing the campus and surrounding Greensboro area.

Enhance game day experience and attendance at athletic events. 

  • Strategy #1: Foster student interest and affinity with Athletics.
  • Strategy #2: Determine and create meaningful engagement opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Strategy #3: Foster strong relationships with alumni to increase their engagement and support for the Athletics program, enhancing a sense of community and long-term affinity.
  • Strategy #4: Increase student engagement with Athletics.
  • Strategy #5: Increase public awareness and engagement with Athletics programs in the broader Greensboro community through targeted outreach, events, and partnerships by the end of the year.
  • Strategy #6: Increase event attendance by developing and executing a comprehensive marketing plan that targets key audiences, leverages multiple promotional channels, and incorporates strategic partnerships and data-driven tactics.
  • Strategy #7: Develop a comprehensive action plan that outlines specific tactics, timelines, and responsibilties to effectively implement and support the annual marketing plan.
  • Strategy #8: Create a vibrant and engaging game day atmosphere that appeals to families, encouraging increased attendance, repeat visits, and a sense of community enjoyment.
  • Strategy #9: Engage collegiate sports fans to gather and analyze feedback on merchandise preferences, using insights to drive a targeted marketing strategy that boosts fan engagement and maximizes revenue.

Goal Statement: We will maintain a championship mentality authentic to the UNCG Athletics vision, by fostering an environment of consistency, inclusiveness, integrity, transparency, and trust. 

Consistently create and offer engaging opportunities on campus and in the community for the student-athletes to compete in Championships and have post graduate success.

  • Strategy #1: Allocate resources to maintain a championship environment, in nutrition, mental health, and professional development.
  • Strategy #2: Coordinate community service outreach to increase overall athletic department participation.
  • Strategy #3: Develop a Spartan Allegiance Award to recognize the efforts and longevity of student-athletes who have started and finished a degree at UNCG.

Recruit, hire, develop, and retain coaches and staff who will consistently model and improve the culture of UNCG Athletics. 

  • Strategy #1: Create a comprehensive new hire orientation for coaches and support staff. 
  • Strategy #2: Expect coaches and staff to lead by example in order to model student-athlete expectations. 
  • Strategy #3: Identify University resources and support for professional development. 
  • Strategy #4: Maintain a positive working environment that fosters collaboration, support, and teamwork. 

Emphasize a culture committed to operating with integrity and adhering to the rules and regulations of the University, SoCon, and the NCAA. 

  • Strategy #1: Create compliance education materials to be shared with all UNCG coaches, staff and student-athletes.
  • Strategy #2: Proactively communicate compliance education in a consistent manner.
  • Strategy #3: Ensure accountability of all staff for adherence to compliance standards.

Goal Statement: We will create and sustain an environment dedicated to competing for conference championships and postseason success within the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. 

Actively monitor and stay informed about legislative updates, emerging trends, and other changes that impact intercollegiate athletics at the national, state, conference, and institutional levels. 

  • Strategy #1: Create committee and shared process to monitor changes within intercollegiate athletics industry.

Adapt to the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics by providing appropriate resources to meet our competitive expectations.
