UNCG women's basketball downs Winthrop 62-52 for first win of the season

GREENSBORO, NC UNC Greensboro shot 83.3 percent (25-for-30) from the free throw line, including 15-of-17 in the second half, to lead the Spartans to a 62-52 win over Winthrop in the opening game of the UNCG Tournament at Fleming Gym. The victory marked the first of the season for UNCG and squared its record at 1-1. Winthrop falls to 0-3.

 

UNCG will play the winner of the second game of the tournament, which features Pittsburgh and South Carolina State. The championship game is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 3 pm or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the consolation game at 1 pm.

 

Kemena Brooks led the Spartans with a game-high 17 points. Jasmine Byrd added nine points, while KaLeah Latham came off the bench and narrowly missed a “double-double” as she provided nine points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes.

 

Gene't Moore led Winthrop with 13 points, behind three 3-pointers. Katie Kilcollin added 11 points and a team-high seven boards.

 

UNCG used a 13-2 run in the later stages of the second half to extend its lead to as many as 14, 60-46 with 2:06 remaining. Jasmine Dixon began the run with a pair of free throws and Irene Otamiri followed with a trey to extend the Spartans lead to eight, 52-44. Otamiri would finish the spurt with another jumper. The Eagles would not get any closer than 10 the rest of the way

 

Winthrop led 28-27 to begin the second half and extended its lead to as much as five, 32-27 on a Kilcollin layup with 17:09 to go. UNCG responded by scoring 20 of the next 26 points to go up nine, 47-38 with 8:38 left. Brooks, the freshman from Accokeek, MD, scored the first five points of the run, while Byrd, a sophomore from Dumfries, VA, scored the final five points for the Spartans.

 

The first half featured six lead changes and four ties. Brooks gave UNCG the largest lead of the first half, 23-16, on a 3-pointer with 7:20 left until intermission, but Winthrop closed the half on a 12-4 run to lead 28-27 heading to the locker room.

 

Byrd converted all six of her free throws and is 12-for-12 from the charity stripe on the season. Byrd also came up with a game-high five steals, while Kristen Boone dished out five assists in 19 minutes off the bench. The two teams combined for 51 turnovers and 50 fouls.
