Spartan Baseball Scores a 6-5 Extra-Inning Win over Delaware

Wes McCall picked up the win in relief for the Spartans

GREENSBORO, NC – Junior Chris Mason scored the game-winning run off a throwing error by the Delaware shortstop as the Spartans defeated the Blue Hens, 6-5, in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Senior third baseman Jeremy Roulin went 3-for-5, while Mason and Adam Deleo added two hits each for the Spartans.

Kelly Buber, Brock Donovan and Bryan Hagerich had two hits apiece to pace Delaware.

Freshman reliever Wes McCall, who entered in the eighth inning, picked up his first career win. McCall, the left-hander from Gastonia, NC, struck out three batters and allowed only hit. Matt Heppner (0-1) suffered the loss for Delaware out of the bullpen.

The Spartans (2-0) got on the board for the second straight day in the first inning on a Justin Crist double to right field that scored Mason all the way from first base.

Delaware (0-2) took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. First baseman Adam Tsakonas drove in the first run with a triple to right center field that scored Bryan Valichka who walked to start the inning. Tsakonas scored one batter later on Brent Rogers' sacrifice-fly.

Delaware increased its lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning on Brock Donovan's double to left field that scored Kelly Buber who reached base to start the inning with a single.

After a run in the bottom half of the sixth, the Spartans tied it in the seventh on a sac-fly by Danny McClure that scored Roly Gonzalez.
UNCG answered Delaware's run in the top of the eight, with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. David Adams tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right, while Deleo's infield single scored Crist from third.

Hagerich scored the game-tying run for the Blue Hens in the ninth on a ground out to third by Ryan Graham.

The final game of the three-game weekend series takes place on Sunday at 12 noon.
