Spartan Baseball Defeats Delaware, 4-3; Completes Series Sweep of the Blue Hens

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro broke away from a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning as the Spartans defeated Delaware, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

 

UNCG (3-0) scored two of the three runs in the inning with one out. Junior Chris Mason got the inning started with a double to left center field that scored Danny McClure, who singled to reach base. One batter later, senior Justin Crist drove in Jeremy Roulin with a single to right field. Mason plated the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

 

Sophomore Nick Starnes (1-0) picked up the win for UNCG. Starnes, the right-hander from Haw River, NC struck out nine batters in six innings of work.  Junior Jonathan Nichols pitched the final 2-2/3 innings to get the save. Left-hander Brent Gaphardt (0-1) suffered the loss for Delaware (0-3).

 

Crist paced the Spartan attack with two hits, while seven others in the starting lineup recorded hits. All nine starters reached base at least once on the afternoon. Brock Donovan led Delaware with two hits on the game and four in the series.

 

UNCG, which swept the three-game series with Delaware, returns to action on Tuesday when the Spartans take on in-town rival North Carolina A&T. First pitch from War Memorial Stadium is set for 3 p.m. Delaware travels to Richmond to take on the Spiders for a three-game weekend series starting on Saturday, February 26 with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
